"You could say flying's always been in my blood. My pa drug my older brother Norman and I around the country barnstorming as kids, and then Norm flew an A-20 in the Pacific. Too young for World War II, I had my chance in Korea. Guess the sense of danger and exposure and novelty from my dad's barnstorming drew me to helicopters.
Stayed in the army after Korea. Ended up as program attaché with Bell Aeronautics. Some of the engineers would develop the Bell Rocket Belt. But others? They had more... esoteric... ideas of "Machine-Unencumbered Human Flight."
It was all hush-hush X-Program stuff. Chemistry and vitamins and blood transfusions and surgical procedures and something about the properties of a certain hydrogen isotope in reaction to specific blood types.
Yet here I am. Decades later. Can you believe I turned turned ninety-five last year? Ninety-five!"
