Forest Bastion
From the notes of Dr. Hector P. Moroz.
Forest Bastion is a Fire Blast/Nature Affinity Corruptor originating from Praetoria. He is currently a vigilante.
History
Bastion has only shared a handful of details about his youth. The limited information he has shared, his behavior during these discussions, and his tenancy to suppress his emotions indicate serious childhood trauma. I have limited my inquiries in order to avoid retraumatizing him.
Bastion was born to a relatively elite family that resided in the Imperial City.
When he was a young child, he suffered a serious illness that has still not been identified. The disease left him permanently blind.
He was given a comprehensive health examination after he was found on Primal Earth. No pathogens known to cause blindness were found. Actually, they didn't find any disease-causing pathogens at all, not even mild ones. "Healthy as a horse" doesn't describe the half of it.
Bastion apparently adapted quickly to his blindness and didn't suffer any distress over losing his eyesight. However, his parents were devastated by the loss of their "normal" son. His behavior was tightly controlled even from a young age. The one detail he gave before inquiries about this time were stopped was that his mother once found him practicing echolocation and yelled at him for "making weird noises."
This is where he starts to become sullen and withdrawn and I tell him I'm dropping the topic of his parents forever and go get the both of us strong drinks.
The details of how Bastion ended up in the wilds around Praetoria are unclear, even to him. He only knows that he heard something calling to him in the night and he was outside of the sonic barriers by the following morning. He soon discovered his strong affinity for life magic and used it to make the wilds into his home. He did experience hostility from the Hamidon's monsters, but all of their attempts to kill, infect, or otherwise remove him failed.
Bastion lived by himself in the wilds for at least a decade, but at some point he chose to return to Praetoria. He came to the realization that the price he paid for his freedom was loneliness and he missed being around other people.
Unfortunately, he only ran into new problems when he returned to Praetoria. Instead of finding community, he wandered into a media circus. Everyone had to learn about the strange blind man who lived in the wilds for years. He had to be shown on every TV channel, interviewed by every magazine and newspaper, go to every ceremony and gala, on and on for weeks.
Bastion could have let his 15 minutes of fame run out, but the psychological toll from being a spectacle turned him into a powder keg. That was when a radical faction of the Resistance found him and changed him from a curiosity to a terrorist. He rocked the Imperial City with a series of bombings and kidnappings over the next few months. His reign of terror ended when he was sent to Primal Earth to recruit fighters to support the Resistance.
That was ostensibly Bastion's mission but the truth of the situation was that the Resistance wanted to get rid of him. He was becoming more uncontrollable and violent. Bastion himself realized as much pretty quickly, but he doesn't blame them.
Bastion disappeared shortly after arriving in Paragon City. M.A.G.I. eventually found him living in an isolated corner of Perez Park while investigating frantic behavior by the Circle of Thorns. Apparently his presence in the area was disrupting their rituals and they were moving either to kill him or make him their thrall. For his safety it was necessary to have him live in normal society. After days of planning, replanning, begging, magical incidents, and bureaucratic maneuvering, M.A.G.I. had Bastion living in my extra bedroom and getting registered as a hero.
I guess I kinda owe them but I wish they'd quit pushing problem people on me. Right now I'd say he's not the worst roommate, except that he unwittingly clogs the bathroom drains with plant matter every so often and sometimes just disappears and reappears without any explanation.
Abilities
Bastion has a natural affinity for life magic and constantly channels it through his body unconsciously. The most visible effect it has on him is that it has caused plants to grow on his body. The plant matter is especially concentrated on his hands and feet, since he prefers to channel his magic out through them. The high amounts of magic in his body has also affected his hair, which has streaks that change from green to yellow to red to brown depending on his mood and the ambient temperature, and his eyes, which are completely green except for milky white pupils and surrounded with scar-like markings that change color like the streaks in his hair.
When he channels his magic out of his body, it can take a few different forms. The most common way he uses it for combat purposes is igniting it. Additionally, he can rapidly grow toxic plants and fungi.
The most pervasive aspect of his magic is the way he uses it for healing both actively and passively. He recovers from injuries very quickly and he never seems to get sick. He can channel his magic into other people to invigorate them and heal their wounds and diseases.
Come to think of it, I haven't gotten sick once since he started living with me.
In addition to his magic, Bastion has also developed keen senses that more than compensate for his blindness. He does use some assistive technologies such as braille, screen readers, and voice controls, but otherwise he requires little to no assistance in his daily life.
He's also an amazing cook, cleans up surprisingly well on his own, and makes the best old fashioned I've ever had. Sometimes I almost forget he's blind.
