His mother, Mary, was the heart of their home—a schoolteacher with a stubborn streak and a bottomless capacity for love. His father, Gerald, was a retired factory worker with old scars and a sharper tongue. Eli never measured up in his father’s eyes, especially compared to his golden-child older brother, Danny, who became a cop straight out of high school and never looked back.

When Mary died of cancer, the already-cracked family shattered. Gerald drank. Danny buried himself in work. Eli dropped out of college and disappeared into debt. He drifted from job to job until he landed a gig as a janitor at Crey BioSolutions, a low-rent subsidiary of Crey Industries. “The Crash Changed My Body. Losing My Mom Changed My Heart.”

Eli loaded the canisters into his car and drove into the countryside to dump them. A storm rolled in. Rain pelted his windshield. His tires—bald and cracked—slid on the road. He didn’t see the truck until it hit him.

The crash ruptured the canisters. Black polymer gel exploded across the wreckage, seeping into his skin, into his bloodstream. Then the power lines came down. Thousands of volts surged through his body, catalyzing a grotesque transformation.

Terrified, he confided in Danny, hoping his older brother could help. But Danny didn’t believe him. He thought Eli was high or delusional. "Stop screwing up your life and grow up," he snapped. The door slammed shut, and the chasm between them widened.

DeSetefano believed human flexibility was a flaw, a weakness that made people prone to injury, instability, and failure. To test his theories, he developed the Hyper-Dermal Ossification Serum, a compound designed to make tissues ultra-dense, increasing durability and resistance.
