Unmarried and pretty young, her birth mother couldn’t afford a child, much less one with special requirements. So, she surrendered her, leaving her nothing but her name. Kalika Kai. Moved around through foster homes, Kalika didn’t get it easy. It was difficult enough being in the system, but being ‘different’ added to that stress. Six years of this left her a quiet, withdrawn child who spent a lot of time reading and doodling as a way to keep from having to engage with others. At the age of seven, she was finally sent to a foster home that helped. Mark and Penny Ellis had moved to the islands to work under a wealthy German man, and after establishing residency, opened their home to a foster child. It was luck that placed Kalika in their care. Penny opted to homeschool her, taking her to the beach on the weekends. The personal attention helped open up the little girl and she became a little less withdrawn. That summer introduced her to her future father. The Roth Foundation had been established in the mid eighties by a man with good intentions. Aldridge Roth came from old German money. After losing his sister - a mutant with severe acclimation issues - to medical professionals with little understanding, he decided to throw his money into research. Establishing the Foundation in Hawaii, Aldridge donated money to the conservation of the coastline, helping to spread the state parks by several miles in each direction. And while that didn’t make him a local, it did give him quite a heavy dose of good will with those that were. By the early nineties, the Foundation had fifty employees and was doing some verifiably good work. Aldrige made sure that there was plenty of downtime for his staff, including an annual Bash on the Beach. The Ellis family enjoyed the beach immensely, and took the opportunity to bring their foster daughter to the event. Mark and Aldrige knew each other from a conference on the mainland. After being hired as the CFO, Mark built a friendship with Aldrige which helped the foundation’s stability. When Mark and Penny took in their foster child, Aldrige gave him a few weeks off to help acclimate her to the home, and offered any assistance to help the young mutant settle in. The end of his break coincided with the Bash on the Beach, and that was when he introduced Kalika to Aldridge.
