Background

Description

An apprentice conservationist sent to the Northwest Territories, Josiah's limited experience nearly cost him his life when he was confronted by a mother polar bear protecting her cubs. True and foolish to his cause, Josiah prepared to die and refused to defend himself using his weapon in hand knowing how endangered these animals already were. Just as the bear closed distance with him, a strange wind would suddenly blow as an essence of Nanook possessed the bear and communicated with the human. Impressed with Josiah's soul, Nanook gifted him a peculiar bow, which would imbue him with supernatural powers!

Blessing of Nanook - Josiah's powers originate from the blessing of Nanook, gifted to him in the form of a supernatural bow which contains an essence of the deity's power. Composed of a substance nicknamed "spirit-ice", the bow can be summoned and returned at will to and from what is understood as a "pocket realm of Nanook".

Spirit-Ice Armor - Josiah's perceived costume is made of supernatural spirit-ice armor, which surrounds his body when the spirit-ice bow is activated. It provides supernatural durability against a variety of afflictions: preventing bullets from penetrating, protecting from temperature extremes and even providing protection against magic-based attacks, as examples.

Spirit-Ice Manipulation - Josiah is capable of tapping into the supernatural power of this spirit-ice substance and manipulate it in a variety of ways beyond simply conjuring the spirit-ice arrows the bow utilizes as its base projectiles. Other uses include but are not limited to projecting shapes that are more blunt in nature, surrounding others with protective spirit-ice armor or assaulting localized areas with spirit-ice storms.

Abilities

Marksmanship - While he is using the spirit-ice bow, Josiah is granted an intuitive marksmanship ability, though in recent time his own training has closed the gap between his natural skills and the supernatural skills he derived from the spirit-ice bow.

Weapons and Equipment

Outside of the spirit-ice bow, Josiah is typically equipped with communications technology and isn't adverse to using miscellaneous items and equipment should it be necessary for the task at hand.

Weaknesses and Limitations

Dependence - Without the spirit-ice bow, Josiah possesses no superhuman powers or abilities on his own accord other than his idiosyncratic link with his weapon. While the great majority of outside sources have lack the ability to forcefully separate him from his weapon (physically or otherwise), it is still possible should said outside sources bare the power level of a deity that can match or exceed that of Nanook.

Power Depletion - The activated state (dawning spirit-ice armor) of the spirit-ice bow can only remain active for several hours at a time before its supernatural power must recharge. Relating to this aspect, consistent damage inflicted on Josiah's armor will eventually wear it down.

Other Skills and Talents

Wildlife/Nature Knowledge - Josiah's educational background is centered around environmental conservation. He is quite knowledgeable of wildlife and the environment in general, especially of his own nation.

Photography - Josiah's passion even before he decided to become heavily involved in the environmental elements of his identity and life's mission, he is moderately talented, and at this point highly skilled in photography, especially involving the outdoors. He fortunately found a way to marry the two into a career.

Inuinnaqtun - Josiah's interest in his grandmother's Inuit heritage remained only as a moderate interest and respect. However, following his encounter with Nanook, he has placed much more effort in really diving into the history and tradition of the indigenous peoples of Canada's most beautiful region. He's specifically studying his grandmother's Kitlinermiut (Copper Inuit) roots, and attempting to learn the language of Inuinnaqtun. As an Inuk, she is the only person who knows Josiah's identity as Snow-Bird, and his encounter with Nanook.

Trivia

• If it wasn't already obvious, the theme of Snow-Bird was influenced by a combination of Marvel's Snowbird and Hawkeye.
• A portion of this character's background is a recycled/refined version of a previous character that exhibited a similar origin story but has been retired from the CoX world.
