Shopkeeper is an interdimensional merchant of magical items. Shopkeeper was born in a place known only as the "Realm Between Realms". Following in the footsteps of his mother and father, Shopkeeper is the current curator for his family's collection. As a neutral entity with little morality, Shopkeeper has been known to trade magical artifacts with both heroes and villains.
Appearance
Shopkeeper is often formally dressed and well put-together, valuing his outward appearance. His clothes are never stained nor wrinkled. He wears a dark grey three-piece suit with black dress shoes, white gloves, and a silver puff tie. In addition, he also wears an enchanted, hooded, two-colored cloak with brass-like trim. The cloak itself is decorated in ornate and exotic patterns, clearly made of a high-quality fabric unlike anything on Earth. The hood of his cloak almost always conceals the entirety of his face in a black shadow, with only his fuschia-tinted glasses visible. His belt is made of a brass-colored metal, with a large, purple, disk-shaped gemstone at the buckle. Sometimes, leather pouches with varying designs can be seen lining his belt and the inside of his cloak.
Personality
Shopkeeper's motivations are difficult to assess. At times, Shopkeeper is outwardly greedy and covetous, motivated by wealth and profit. Other times, he is more altruistic, motivated by kindness, amusement, and novelty. Shopkeeper often alternates between serious and methodical, to whimsical and reckless. It is unclear whether his outward behavior is his true self, a guise he invented, or a product of affliction caused by the many magical artifacts he collects.
In terms of values, the only thing he seems to hold sacred is his personal concept of the "divine transaction". Shopkeeper believes that all things, services or goods, may only change hands through some kind of exchange (even if the exchange is unfair). Shopkeeper believes all things have a price, and thus will never steal nor exchange gifts. He strongly disagrees with the "inevitability of death and taxes", which manifests in his pursuit of immortality and his near-daily FBSA audits.
He exhibits all the behaviors of introversion, tending to prefer solitude over group endeavors. He remains remarkably sociable, however; a necessity for his work as a merchant. With trusted individuals, he is often honest, generous, and willing to help in their endeavors. For those that have scorned him, however, he is vindictive and exceedingly slow to forgive. Shopkeeper is a pacifist, preferring to resolve conflict with diplomacy and exchange, over outright combat.
Abilities
Eldritch Biology
Little is known about Shopkeeper's true physiology. He is be able to survive in the vacuum of space and in the inhospitable environments of other dimensions with little issue. He seems susceptible to psychic and psionic influence, but has an unnaturally high resistance to mind-control or thought-reading. He is resilient to poison and disease, but is lethally allergic to Mortobello Mushroom, an edible fungus of unknown origin. He is able to take damage and feel pain from physical attacks, but does not bruise or bleed. He has the strength and agility of a normal human, but superhuman levels of stamina, rarely tired or sleepy. He does not require food or drink, but insists on have regular meals "for the sake of normalcy".
Dimensional Traveler
Shopkeeper has a variety of methods for travel. He is able to levitate, and hover at slow speeds. For larger distances, Shopkeeper can teleport inconspicuously. He seems to be able to use these abilities instantly, making him particularly elusive and difficult to track. His teleportation allows him to travel between dimensions, allowing him to retreat to a safe location at any time. He is only able to teleport himself and his equipment. The source of his mobility is believed to be among the magical items on his person.
In addition to his superior mobility, Shopkeeper has an aura of magical innocuity. This masks his presence and makes him difficult to detect. The ability does not make him invisible, but instead allows him to easily disappear around corners, blend into crowds, or fade into shadows. This ability also masks him from most common forms of modern, EM-based detection systems, such as infrared motion detection, heat detection, metal detection, radar, and many others. It seems to take a considerable amount of effort by a veteran magic user to detect him when he doesn't wish to be seen. He often uses this ability to make unannounced appearances or exits.
All of these abilities seem to stem from his pacifist, mercantile nature.
Bag Wizard
Through a potent enchantment, the bags and pockets on his person seem to hold far more than their outward size would suggest. This enchantment seems to nullify the weight of items stored, behaving more like a portal, allowing Shopkeeper to have access to his entire inventory wherever he goes. The bags and pockets all seem to be linked to some kind of pocket dimension. All items in his inventory seem accessible from any bag or pocket (provided it can fit through it), and the destruction of the bags or pockets do not render his items inaccessible. Most of the items in his collection are handheld, able to fit through a 6 inch by 6 inch hole. Rarely does he collect larger magical items.
Beyond his skill as an enchanter and collector, Shopkeeper wields a wide range of more traditional spells. The spells he uses are not difficult to replicate, and many are known spells from a variety of schools of magic (therefore having known countermeasures).
Roleplay
Shopkeeper is a versatile character, flexible for all kinds of roleplay. He can serve as both an ally or an antagonist for a variety of plotlines. Some possible hooks are:
- Your character requires a magical item from Shopkeeper's extensive inventory.
- Your character has a magical family heirloom that Shopkeeper wishes to purchase.
- Your character is an apprentice spellcaster wishing to learn the 'Bottomless Pockets' enchantment.
- Your character has come into the possession of a cursed item, and requires help breaking the curse.
