Born and raised in Steel Canyon, Benjamin "Ben" Stone is a mechanical engineer working for the up-and-coming research and development facility META, based within the same district. Gaining the notice of the company's very own CEO, David Drake, Ben became the man's protégé, becoming more and more self-centered as he started working for him directly—leading to the development of Ben's life work: The Perpetual Engine, an experimental piece of technology conceptualized by Ben as well as his close friend, Jonathan West, with the intent of providing Paragon City, the City of Heroes, an unlimited supply of clean and renewable energy. Unfortunately, on the day of testing, an unexpected hardware error caused the Engine to malfunction, unleashing deadly amounts of dark matter on both Ben and Jonathan. Both men were in a coma, and the project was deemed a complete disaster, plummeting META's stock as well as ruining Ben's reputation.

Ben woke up from his coma first a few days later. Aside from finding out everything he worked for was in shambles, he discovered something else entirely; he had gained the ability to manipulate energy itself. From lasers to fire to electricity, Ben could absorb and redirect all kinds of energies to his whim. Not long after, Jonathan awoke as well, exhibiting similar abilities. However, he was in a much worse state as his emotional psyche completely broke, becoming obsessed with getting revenge on the company who ruined his life, especially the man who started the project; Ben himself. As Jonathan went on a rampage with his radiation-based abilities, Ben decided to make a choice. Consumed by guilt from his previous actions, he sought to put an end to his own former friend's warpath, creating a suit using META's resources and his own ingenuity—defeating Jonathan on-top of the META building in Steel Canyon. The next day, he was approached by his boss Drake, who decided to keep him employed despite the incident that led to these events. Since then, Ben modified his suit further, becoming the aptly-named superhero known as Energy.

Juggling his engineering career in META while also stopping fires and defeating rampaging supervillains as Energy, Ben quickly gained a rogues gallery of his own as he became more and more notorious for his increasing heroic exploits. Ben's work life became further complicated as he developed a growing feud with his work rival and boss, Jared Cross, who held a grudge against Ben following the Perpetual Engine disaster―eventually becoming his own arch-nemesis, the Dark Crescent, after several tragedies brought upon his downfall, including the discovery of Energy's secret identity. In time, Ben also formed a superhero team of his own called the Icons alongside the heroes Golden Knight and Fyrebrand, although the team eventually split in late 2024. More recently in 2025, Ben donned a new white-and-green armored suit, as well as joining the Advocators supergroup.

Biography

Early life

Benjamin Stone was born on May 24, 1995 in Steel Canyon, Paragon City to Bruce and Jasmine Stone. His father was a football coach and his mother was a science-fiction author. As a kid, Ben was very much into sci-fi, growing closer to his mother through her career, while in contrast wasn't as close with his father, for one due to his overall lack of interest in sports. He was also especially captivated by the superheroes of Paragon such as the Freedom Phalanx, particularly Positron. The Stone family faced hardship during the Rikti War after the invasion first began in 2002, which caused the deaths of Ben's grandfather and cousin.

Not much is known concretely about Ben's life growing up in the years after, and it's assumed he simply had a (mostly) ordinary life in Steel Canyon. He attended Steel Canyon University in 2013 and graduated with a mechanical engineering degree, leading him to work with the up-and-coming research and development facility META, based in the same district, due to a recommendation he received from one of his professors as well as the interest of the company's CEO, David Drake. Around this time, Ben's father Bruce died suddenly of heart failure; as of 2025, Ben still feels guilty for not spending as much time as he could with his dad before he unexpectedly passed away.

Powers

• Energy Manipulation: Energy, as his name suggests, can freely manipulate all kinds of energy to his whim; including fire, electricity, sound, light, kinetic energy, and even radiation and gravity (although to a more limited degree). This is his primary ability, which also allows him access to various other abilities usable in combat and daily life.
  • Energy Absorption: Energy can absorb all the types of energies listed above; when he does, that form of energy, if visible, turns bright green as it's absorbed into Ben's body, who then subsequently can either store the energy or unleash it at his enemies in the form of blasts, beams or simply the energy in its purest form (to often devastating effects). Storing these energies in turn allows Ben to increase his own physical capabilities, especially his endurance, as well as his other energy-based attacks. Absorbing various energies in his day-to-day life also gave Ben a reservoir of residual energy, allowing him to generate attacks without having to absorb anything for a limited period of time, which can increase the more he absorbs energy. This also, for one, allows him to remain active without needing to sleep for 2 weeks at a time. Despite all these abilities, Ben cannot absorb every type of energy he encounters, depending on their properties. For instance, Ben cannot absorb magic-based attacks without some form of consequence (such as extreme fatigue or straight up unconsciousness). He also cannot absorb too much energy at once without overloading, immediately unleashing all the energy at once and becoming extremely disoriented.
  • Flight: Energy can manipulate his own personal gravitational field, allowing him to fly, glide and otherwise levitate effortlessly through the skies with no need to create his own leverage—including enhanced jumping/leaping.
• Enhanced Physiology: In addition to granting Ben his energy-manipulating powers, the dark matter that flooded Ben's cells thanks to the Perpetual Engine also heightened his overall physiology, increasing his strength, speed, durability, stamina and agility. Although his strength, durability and agility aren't particularly too high compared to other metahumans and super-beings, his speed and especially his stamina were heighted to superhuman levels.

Abilities

• Gifted Intelligence: Ben is exceptionally intelligent, able to come up with fast solutions to problems, and use his engineering skills whenever applicable.
  • Expert Engineer: Being a gifted engineer, Ben has designed many inventions throughout his career in META and life as the superhero Energy; having designed the Perpetual Engine which was conceptualized to give the entirety of Paragon City unlimited energy for perpetuity, the META exo-suits which would become the template for his Energy Armor, as well as several gadgets and devices used for remote purposes, such as his energy-absorbing weapon, the Energy Sword.
• Skilled Combatant: Ben is a skilled fighter, having been trained in hand-to-hand combat and swordsmanship by the alien warrior, the Atomic Sentry, during his time working for the Federal Bureau for Super-powered Affairs and SERAPH. Although not an expert and completely knowledgeable combatant, Ben is more than capable of taking on several criminals and supervillains without necessarily using his powers.

Equipment

• Energy Armor: While out in the field as Energy, Ben is equipped with an advanced green-and-gold colored technological suit of armor, modified by Ben himself from his own designs for META's experimental exo-suits. Aside from protecting his real identity, Ben's armor increases his durability, comes with a retractable golden visor capable of vastly increasing his vison, and includes different gadgets within his sleek utility belt usable for different situations. His armor also comes with a built-in communicator and police scanner. Currently, Ben uses an improved version of the Energy Armor that is white-and-green. While certainly helping him in many ways, the armor is also a weakness for Ben as it can be hijacked remotely by expert hackers and/or technopaths.
• Energy Sword: Having wielded it in his early days as Energy, Ben has designed and built a sword-like weapon to use while fighting crime. Of a futuristic design, the Energy Sword is a golden hilt that, when activated, emanates a translucent green blade. While named after and looking like a sword, the weapon functions more like a baton when used in combat, and is incapable of actually cutting through anything. The Sword acts as a lightning rod of sorts, able to absorb all manner of energy and safely store it within. Having mastered his energy absorption powers in the following years, Ben had largely no more need for the Sword and so has stopped using it altogether by 2025.
