A young monster hunter and student of the arts, SAFEHOUSE isn't as much a hero by choice as he is out of necessity, and out of a strong sense of duty. He primarily aims to protect the innocents of the world from threats beyond the veil, the dark wizards, the things that go 'bump' in the night, though he's more than happy to take on thugs and fascists when the opportunity arises too. Even in the world of magic, where he most often operates, Safehouse is an outlier. He is no spell slinger; nor is he able to sense mystical energies or channel spirits. Yet as time passes, he grows stronger through passive exposure to cosmic aether, and it's through that power that he aims to make the world a better place.
Born in Syracuse, New York, Ronan Caleb Adams had a simple, even pleasant, childhood. Ronan was a quiet kid who enjoyed drawing and playing saxophone, focused on his school studies and extracurriculars. He was well-liked by his teachers and classmates, though he was never popular enough to get invited to any of the really fun stuff. Instead, he and his best friends Tracey Hill and Steven Carter contented themselves with reading about the exploits of heroes the world over. He often dreamed of awakening superpowers and impressing his long-time crush Lisa Summers, though puberty came with no sign of latent mutations. As fifteen came and went with no sign of changes, Ronan resigned himself to an ordinary life. Though he pined after Lisa as much as ever, he turned his focus to the rest of high school life. He even caught himself enjoying his life!
At the end of summer between tenth and eleventh grade, as he finally fell into a rhythm keeping his head out of the clouds, Ronan's friend Tracey flipped his reality on its head. During a visit following her return from vacation Tracey declared in hushed tones that she was a witch and that, more importantly, Ronan housed latent mystical potential that had potential to attract dangerous forces. While not outwardly dismissive of her claim, Ronan internally determined that Tracey must have lost her mind. After their visit, he resolved to move on and lean into the normal world of a high school. For a time, things proceeded as normal.
Then, more than a year after the last time Ronan talked with Tracy, it all changed. The shadows on his walls grew, attacked him in the night - an eldritch monster of demonic origin had found its way to him and longed to devour his budding aether. That night, long after he had given up on the dream of an extraordinary life, the extraordinary life found him. That night, Safehouse was born.
PERSONALITY
Like most kids his age, Safehouse has an optimistic, idealistic outlook on the way the world could be. Because of this, he uses his superhero persona to stand up for what he believes is right, and to fight for the better future he knows the world can have. Though he initially believed that that better future included the eradication of all demons and extradimensional threats, recent encounters with demons among the ranks of heroes has forced him to reconcile with the fact that demons are not universally evil or monstrous - that they, in fact, bear every bit as much complexity as humans.
Generally kind, patient, and gentle, Safehouse believes in expressing kindness to everybody. However, in his youth, he has sometimes mistaken "niceness" with kindness, and has made himself a doormat to his peers. He has a weakness for girls, and this makes him more inclined to be a pushover for them, or even turn the other way when they do something he doesn't think is right, particularly if doing so earns him favor. He is working on this, and while he generally has a soft spot for the fairer sex, he is also respectful and professional.
Although he is patient, Ronan can have a sharp temper, especially when pushed too far. Like a scorpion, his anger flares sharp and fast, and then quickly fades once he has expressed it. However, he is not above the occasional grudge - the deeper the wrongdoing and the more intensely he has been angered or betrayed, the stronger and longer lasting the anger.
Ronan has a bit of a loner streak. Due to his individualistic style, fixation on music and art, and exposure to numerous threats since awakening his power, Safehouse struggles to let people in, particularly if they are not able to defend themselves if they get caught between him and the monsters that hound him. However, this is gradually lessening over time as Ronan has come to Paragon City and worked alongside fellow supers.
