And so for a full year “Beat” became hell on wheels for the various gangs preying on Skyway, fighting with purse snatchers and two-bit robbers, marking territory as her own, and protecting the people who couldn't take care of themselves. Slowly but surely she was able to push back on the criminal element that had crept in and taken root, chipping away at the small time crooks. Of course, she was considered just as much a criminal by the proper authorities as those she was stopping. The local boys in blue saw no difference between the tags of the gangs and Alex's own and she had never bothered to officially register with the FBSA. The can of spray paint clattered against the concrete, clinking merrily until it rolled up against the curb. The young woman drifted back and admired her work, a large upturned middle finger with a letter on each knuckle spelling out "Beat", her moniker. She considered it a vast improvement over the sloppily done crossbones with the word "Skuls" scribbled under it in uneven splotches. She began to reach into her duffel when the sound of a panicked shout cut through her headphones. Slipping them to the side she waved her hand toward her ear, drawing the noise in, and sighed. More gangs, more Skulls, more trouble. "Time to rock," she muttered to herself as a grin split her lips and her blades clacked against the street, the sound far louder than it should be and growing...
"So, you wanna know if I'm a hero, huh? Nah, nothin' like that. I'm jus' another punk who got tired of seein' all the garbage pilin' up on the streets, y'know? You're not gonna catch me rocking tights or wearin' no spandex, but you might see me out there smackin' a few jerks in Halloween costumes, sure."
Alexis Townsend wasn't born into some heroic family, nor were either of her parents anything but normal citizens just trying to provide a good life for their baby girl. She doesn't have a tragic backstory, or traumatic event, and neither of her parents have ever displayed any metahuman abilities of their own. Up until Alexis was 17 she was just another kid, a little rebellious, exceptionally rambunctious, and out there everyday doing living it up and enjoying herself. She grew up in Skyway, went to school, and overall had a normal everyday life.
But as she grew older she became angry with the course her city was taking. Gangs and lowlifes prowling around every corner, harassing and accosting the people she knew, hastily spray painted logos marking off territory with innocent bystanders caught between the squabbles over turf. She never intended to put her powers to use, she just thought it was a neat trick to show off with her friends and saved them the cost of portal speakers, but enough was enough. Grabbing her skates and a duffel bag full of spray paint she ditched band practice and started rolling around Skyway, intentionally heading into the areas her community had warned her about and began covering up the tags and marks left by the filth that had invaded her home.
"I mean, what else could I do? These were my people, my home. I'm out 'ere everyday watchin' scumbags shakedown people like Ms. Haddersham. She never did nothin', she was just a nice old lady with three cats. Why's some scumbag gotta come 'round an' mess with 'er, yeah? She's on social security, she ain't got no real money. It's infuriatin' y'know? So, yeah, I decided to do somethin'. No one else was."
None of that mattered to Alex, though, because she was making a difference, even if it was only a small one.
"So, yeah, I did the whole 'hero' thing, sure, but not like those smilin' jackasses you see on TV and Youtube hammin' it up for the camera an' makin' sponsorship deals. Like Mr. Bochrain, this funny old European dude who would always give us candy and helped fix our bikes an' junk. That guy was awesome an' he didn't deserve the crap he was gettin'. I didn't need some card or boss tellin' me 'ow to 'elp people, I could do that jus' fine on my own."
It wasn't until the gangs started getting stronger and more powerful that Beat's lucky streak finally ran out. Unable to deal with the threat and flee before the red and blue bulbs arrived on the scene she was finally cornered and arrested with the very Skulls she had just stopped, being detained and locked up alongside them. After rifling through her personal affects one of the local cops put the pieces together and made the connection between Alexis and Beat and brokered her a deal. She'd stay out of jail, but only if she went legit, a heroic probation of sorts. She would have to officially register with the FBSA and attend Invictus Academy where they could monitor her actions and properly teach her how to a proper hero. So now skating under the Sword of Damocles Beat is trying her best to keep up the good fight and not let “The Man” get her down.
Decked out in casual loose fitting clothes that seem to have been dredged up from her parents' closets or thrift shops, Alex is definitely a throwback to a decade or two ago with novelty tees, band shirts, and a love of unusual colors. Checking in at a height of 5'2" she's on the shorter side but she makes up for it with a high energy personality. Lean, toned, and tanned it's apparent that she spends more time outside than indoors and the scuffs on her knees and elbows are evidence that she isn't just out there bird watching. The paint splatters on her clothing are almost standard issue at this point. She sports some brunette hair with a hint of red that pairs nicely with her baby blues eyes to go along with a whole list of piercings which include a silver lip ring through the left corner of her bottom lip, a half-inch gauge in either ear, a and triple helix piercing in the top of her left ear. Some poor mishap has also left her with a crescent shaped scar that runs across her left kneecap.
Vibe check? Whatever. A little brash and packing a loudmouth, Alex speaks her mind and let's things fall where they may. Hot-headed and with a temper, Alex constantly finds her mouth moving quicker than her brain which can often lead her into trouble or, at least, some awkward or sticky situations. But despite her flaws she's a fun-loving and optimistic individual. Alex can be a bit of a prankster and joker, often teasing people in a good-nature way, just to get a rise out of them. She has a disdain for those she sees abusing their power, which gives her a bit of an anti-authority streak, and she absolutely despises the types who like to throw their weight around to take advantage of others, especially those weaker or below them in the scheme of things.
Beat's big and loud claim to metahuman fame is the ability to manipulate sound. Whether that be amplification, her preferred use, or nullification and dampening. Most metahumans would hone this into some form of projectile or ranged combat or use it to destabilize enemies and protect allies. But Alex has never been one for finesse when force will do and elects to just lace her street brawling with her own acoustics, using the sound of her fist striking objects to create waves of concussive and near deafening force. The bonus side to this unusual method is it makes for a wonderfully non-lethal method of dispatching crooks and gangs. Few purse snatchers are up for much after having their ears blown out. A list of the various tweaks are as follows.
- Bring The Noise!: Just as it sounds, Beat uses her abilities to increase the volume or decibel range of a normally innocuous sound to destructive levels.
- This Is The Breakdown...: Turning down the volume isn't her go-to, but Alex finds it useful for when she needs to move around unseen.
- 1000 BPM: Probably the most unorthodox usage of her mutant abilities is using the clack of her skates to create concussive bursts to propel her forward at high speed, outpacing some cars.
- Surround Yourself With The Music: A sonic shield doesn't feel like the most impressive feat, but Beat can't knock how handy it is using a revolving wall of sound to deflect pipes and fists aimed at her face.
On the non mutant side of things Alex has been in her share of scraps and scrapes, developing a decent knack for unarmed combat that is typically enough to deal with most of the unfriendly types she runs up against, as well as being hell on vertically aligned wheels with her inline-skates.
