[This article contains major character spoilers. It is also always a WIP. This character's history may undergo minor rewrites over time.]
Mitzi Mischief is a jester-themed criminal operating primarily in Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. A former member of the Carnival of Shadows, she has a penchant for flashy theatrics and is a gifted gymnastic fighter.
Her crimes appear to mostly center around personal gratification (stealing cars and paintings) or eye-catching public pranks. Some commentators have pointed out the activist bent of her work, such as her demand that the Langston Corporation stop using child labour in West Africa to produce candy, and her attacks on conservative organizations such as the American Council for Tradition and Liberty. She has never publicly stated any political affiliation.
Background
Mitzi Mischief, born Marina Hossenfelder, grew up working class family in Canarsie, a townhouse suburb of Brooklyn. With the neighborhood already increasingly marginalized due to white flight in the 90s, the Rikti War absolutely devastated Canarsie when Marina was in elementary school--though the Hossenfelder family stayed due to the rock-bottom rent prices. Marina's father, a union plumber, was an alcoholic who spent most of his salary at the bar. Marina's mother, who took up substitute teaching to help pay the bills, was liked at the local synagogue, but not prominent.
Marina was known as a horrendous troublemaker in her teens--narrowly escaping a juvenile detention case for shoplifting, she was suspended from school for assaulting another student and nearly got expelled. She excelled in certain honors classes, but flunked others and was held back in the 8th grade. She was a gifted gymnast, handily trouncing most of her competitors in the New York no-powers finals. The officials, suspecting she had latent metahuman powers, demanded she get tested. She refused and ultimately left the program.
When she came of age, Marina--unable to afford college tuition--nevertheless befriended several students at the Columbia University campus in Manhattan. She crashed at friends' apartments, worked part time at a local deli, and stole/forged a student ID card to gain access to the university. Keeping her working-poor background under wraps, she fell in with a clique of trust fund kids at the school, a hanger-on to lavish boat parties, a party-drug plug, and a housesitter for her friends' luxury homes. Eventually, she got invited to one of the most exclusive events of the year--a blowout party, secretly being held by a recruiting branch of the Carnival of Shadows.
Carnival of Shadows
Mitzi got invited back to the Carnival's parties several times--groomed for integration by a girl named Ruby, one year her senior. By the time she had her first Dread Carnivale, she was hooked, intoxicated by waves of joy, rage and excitement. She was a damn good reveler, too. Within a few months, she was part of the disorganizing committee for an "out-of-house party" at a doctor's house, and by the end of a year was spearheading several smaller schemes on her own. Creative, violent and a damn good entertainer, she was nevertheless reproached by her peers for being far too much of a blue-collar "plebeian." Their Duchess had made her opinion on 'contemporary art' abundantly clear, and 'contemporary art' contained everything from punk rock to 19th century impressionism. With Vanessa DeVore over in Paragon City, her psychic domination was weak enough for Mitzi to retain some independence. She even started moonlighting, attending classes at CUNY Brooklyn (paid for by her rich friends, who believed the money was going towards planning more violent escapades.)
Throughout it all, she confided in Ruby--her friend and colleague (and, to be honest, secret crush.) From the moment Mitzi had joined the Carnival, Ruby and her had been inseparable... Even as Mitzi, the newer arrival, began to eclipse her in prominence. Mitzi told her everything--and Ruby, perhaps glad that Mitzi wasn't trying to overtake her in the organization, kept her secrets.
Until the breaking point came. Worried about being exposed and kicked out of the Carnival for her insubordination, Mitzi decided on an absolutely daring plan to win the adulation of her superiors. Hijacking a helicopter at gunpoint, she dropped a car full of fireworks into Yankee Stadium in the seventh inning (while playing the Grand March from Verdi's Aida through a set of stolen loudspeakers.)
Though the kidnapped pilot died in the subsequent fiery crash, Mitzi managed to slip away from the ensuing clown-hunt with only a few broken bones to show for it.
The Carnival's response was... mixed. Many of the rank-and-file attendants thought it was an absolute hoot and expected her to make Seneschal on the spot. Her superiors, however, were frustrated by the undue attention she'd brought to the Carnival's activities. They juggled their options.
Ruby fumed. She was about to be leapfrogged for a promotion that was rightfully hers, and would probably be forgotten immediately by a girl who thought Allegro came in a bottle at the local pharmacy.
While the Carnival violently crashed a block party in Brooklyn, Mitzi unexpectedly ran into an old friend from high school. Rather than kill him, she covered his escape from the violence... whereupon he immediately called the police. The heroes arrived much earlier than expected and were able to nab several attendants in the ensuing smackdown. When Mitzi guiltily admitted her failure to Ruby, she had everything she needed: Ruby ratted to her superiors about everything: Mitzi's theft of Carnival resources to pay for tuition, her appreciation of (gasp) Renoir and Picasso, and worst of all, the way she sabotaged her fellow revelers by showing mercy.
That was all the convincing they needed. Within a day, Mitzi was kidnapped and sent to Paragon City. Bound with a psychically imbued golden chain, she was left in an oubliette as they prepared to feed her to Vanessa DeVore. Her friends had betrayed her, her hopes had all failed, and it looked like the party was well and truly over.
Instead of dying, however, Mitzi was freed at the last minute by a group of heroes raiding her prison and her chains broken. Escaping in the midst of the chaos, Mitzi fled into Paragon's underground to lick her wounds.
Recent Activities
Since breaking free of the Carnival of Shadows, Mitzi's launched a bit of a solo career. Her major exploits include:
- Stealing (and usually crashing) over 60 cars in Paragon and the Rogue Isles
- Holding several executives of the Langston Corporation hostage until they agreed to stop using child labor in West Africa (and, more importantly, resume production of Mitzi's favorite candy, the Chock-A-Krunch Bar)
- Sneaking into the vents above the yearly convention of the American Council for Tradition and Liberty and dosing them all with LSD on live television (bulk LSD provided by Cape Cobra.)
- Along with Fleeting Fancy and Bankbuster, sneaking into a rich businessman's private collection, stealing several paintings and then forcing the businessman to watch as Bankbuster simply eats his most prized painting. After realizing there were no public scans or reproductions of the paintings, Mitzi had them scanned, turned into giclée prints, and posted up in various spots around Paragon and Etoile.
