Gale Power Grid Translation
Yas grid 02.jpg
  • Offense: Can bend steel bars. Top lifting weight: 1ton.
  • Defense: Regenerator/Life-stealer. While she can bring herself back from the dead if needed regardless of the state of her remains (or lack thereof), this increases her soul debt so she'll avoid relying in this ability at all except as occasional last resort.
  • Combat: Trained (school of hard knocks).
  • Agency: Meathead/comedy relief character. If part of a bigger villainous scheme, you can count on her temperament to ruin everything when it matters most. Since she shuns the Power Of Love, she is denied the occasional Power of Plot flashes of omnipotence other magical girls enjoy.

Clogged as a Toilet

Alpha Upsilon 24-2, Praetorian Earth. In this earth, it wasn't Marcus Cole who stopped the Cold War dead on its tracks, it was Hamidon Pasalima, and he did it by destroying the world. In this world, instead of throwing the world's nuclear arsenals into the sun, Emperor Cole of Nova Praetoria seemingly kept the nuclear silos and Doomsday Devices of old world powers operational in case he ever needed to do a "glorious last stand." Against his expectations, this last stand where he'd "send the whole planet out in a blaze of glory" would not be against Hamidon, but against an invasion of new gods from a parallel Earth he tried to pacify.

While not the nine billion humans of Primal Earth, sending all life of Earth (including at least half a billion humans) to meet their maker all at the same time clogged all roads to the afterlife... as a result "when there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth" turned out an understatement, since the souls of Alpha Upsilon 24-2's dead not only spilled into the Earth (causing the Night Ward crisis), they started spilling into -other earths-.

Insert Magical Girl introduction monologue... and then she dies

Yasnaya Rodriguez was 14 years old, went to middle school, loved cheese ice cream, had loving parents in cushy desk jobs at Praetoria's Defense Ministry... and then turned to vapor along with her parents, her school, and her intented love interest during the Battle of the Magisterium.

Like most of Praetoria's dead that day, she had to be informed she was, in fact, dead. Unlike most of Praetoria's dead, she wasn't with her family on the endless line, but instead, she was in her "magical girl induction scene" surrounded by talking, cartoony axolotls. The axolotls stated the way Praetoria's dead were spilling into Primal Earth as a big problem, and their need of a champion... well, not a champion, but an enforcer... ok, that's still too much? Errand girl? Anyway, they needed someone to bring all those souls back for processing. She'd get to be a magical girl, have glamourous powers, and in addition, once she finished her task, both her and her parents would get preferential treatment for instant processing into the afterlife.

Half a billion human souls to round up. She better makes it quick.

Novel Escort Jaguar Moth

Yes, the name was stupid, she didn't get to pick it. And the dress was so painfully full of frills. She was eager and wide-eyed at first, but as her journey went on loneliness and disenchantment progressively filled her heart. Her axolotl patrons forgot that key element of giving her a new life in this Primal Earth, so she was deprived of such a crucial part in the magical girl's life as friends, school, love interests, and most important, family. Furthermore, this new world was so alien to her, so different, so horrible. It's like Primal Earth was a dog-eat-dog hellscape of iniquity... perhaps dropping a native from a post-scarcity metahuman utopia/dystopia (depending on how comfortable you were with the wool over your eyes) into the Rogue Isles wasn't the best choice either.

Either way, she discovered a concept unknown to her in this new life: She discovered anarchy.

She still did her magical girl work (the axolotls still held her parents' afterlife over her, after all), but violence and anarchy replaced kindness and frills, and the void of a life she was denied was filled by a biker ganger lifestyle... also, she hasn't cared to de-transform once in ten years, so she has effectively been 14 years old for a decade now, with all the ensueing side-effects.

Personality

Angry, confrontational, and an iconoclast. She hates Arachnos with a passion on account of them being The Man in the isles. Often struck with Christmas depression (or Chronical depression, period, it just gets stronger on Christmas). Chances are, it's only a matter of time before depression gets the better of her and she commits suicide-by-Hamidon. She fears the devouring Earth (for obvious reasons). The times she has to deal with them, it is with particularly high levels of aggression. She has come to hate the axolotls that empowered her and still follow her around (they seem to have made themselves at home at Wasted Youth's HQ, where they fill their bellies and make a mess on a regular basis until Yasnaya catches them, and then runs them out in ritual slapstick comedy routine).

Full Guardian: Composite Henshin Soul Gem

  • The Saturn-shaped Celestite in Yasnaya's belt doubles as the source of her powers and her tether in the world of the living.
  • While it radiates emmissions not unlike magic that can be picked by those with the right senses, it's not actually magic, but Dimensionless-level* metatechnology (let's remember, so-called "magical girls" are rarely, if ever, magical).
  • It is not indestructible, but it takes incarnate-level strength to damage it.
  • Yasnaya's soul gem actually has the powers of two magical girls (Praetorian Watchful Guardian Jaguar and Kindness Soul Guide Moth), and she'd probably be an Alpha-class threat if she didn't waste most of her power keeping the changes she made in her costume in place.
  • Each time she has to bring herself back from the dead, the axolotls add a thousand souls more to her debt (followed by phony explanations on how it takes lots more energy to create life than to destroy it).

(*) 'See CoH's post-shutdown Lore AMAs in Paragon Wiki. The Dimensionless are entities that exist beyond creation and interact with Wells on several levels. If you think of a Well as an IT system, the Dimensionless are the System Administrators just like the Ascended would be Lead Designers.'

Notes

  • In Aztec folklore, jaguars had the power to move between the realms of the living and the dead, and part of the journey to the Aztec underworld inolved jaguars tearing your heart from your ribcage in symbolism of letting go of attachments.
  • In Aztec folklore that persists to this day in Mexico, moths are seen as psychopomps. In Mexico, it is considered a bad omen for a moth to land on a window and stay there, as it presages someone in that house is going to die.
  • As your average anime protagonist, Yasnaya is regularly broke. She's also homeless and eats very poorly.
  • Despite acting like cartoon idiots when interacted with, the Axolotls are Dimensionless entities. While they have shown their powers over life and death, dimensional mastery, and the creation of magical girl soul-gems, the full extent of their power (as well as their true agenda) is unknown.
