Grey Hornet refers to three different individuals who exist across three different dimensions. This will included Nikki Hargrove, a trans-woman who exists on Prime Earth as well as Retro Future Earth (so designated by Portal Corps) as well as Nicolas Hargrove who exists on Praetoria. Nicholas will receive his own section, while the histories of Prime Earth and Retro Future Earth Nikki Hargroves remains virtually identical.

History

Nikki Hargrove was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1990 to Richard Hargrove and Annabelle Sunderland. Her life until the age of six years was a relatively normal one. At six years old, she finally announced to her parents that she was a girl. Both Richard and Annabelle took some time getting used to this, but eventually they grew to accept it.

The next events, however, would bring the small Hargrove family into slight turmoil.

At the age of seven for Nikki, Richard admitted he was gay. A divorce ensued, but was halted at a midpoint when Annabelle announced she had begun a relationship with her lawyer, a woman named Claire. This is the reason why Nikki always says she has two mothers and two fathers. Each couple (Richard not long after began dating and married a former CSIS agent named Samuel Phipps) grew very close even becoming neighbours.

Nikki excelled in mathematic and scientific subjects, though she was a little slower to take in arts and history. Until her father began to suggest she use aspects of history that touched on major mathematic and scientific moments. Events such as major wars could be identified by their technological advancement. Nikki would go onto university, focusing on engineering and minoring in physics. These would help develop her future.

In 2010, with the rise of newer heroes based on past legacies, Nikki decided to do the same. Her father had during the 1970s, been known as the vigilante Grey Hornet and was a member of a group the media dubbed The Heroic League. Other members included Canadien, Britannia, Free Spirit and the Mannikin. And by 2010, newer figures began taking up the guises of Canadienne, Lady Justice, Free Spirit and the Mannikin, carrying on the legacies of the past into the present.

It was not easy for Nikki at first, but she eventually utilized her technological abilities to create a flight suit and helmet, as she focused her own style based on Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Her father had previously based his own style more on Dick Tracy, the Shadow and the detective noir films of the 1940s and 1950s.

Equipment and abilities

Nikki carries with her a pair of phase pistols she created herself. Her suit has gone through several iterations, and has included a rocket pack and a pair of nano tech lightweight fibre insect wings that can collapse into the protective layer of the suit and nearly disappear. As an added bonus, Nikki created a pair of rocket boots to give a slight amount of thrust, while the wings make sure to keep some balance. Nikki has also had martial arts training, and is more than capable of hand to hand combat should she need to. Her diminutive stature is often times deceptive to anyone who fights against her as she can manage to overpower anyone even twice her height.

Nikki's helmet contains not only the necessary safety materials to ensure she does not suffer a concussion, but also a complete communications unit and heads up display. As an added bonus, the helmet contains a small mp3 player, which she often loads with the soundtracks to Flash Gordon, the multiple Star Trek movies or Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, which can often be heard over the comms when speaking with those in a team.

The suit itself can create a hard light cloak, utilizing any light source around it to allow Nikki to activate a stealth mode. This only works when she is not in combat or engaged with any physical items.

Retro Future Earth and the Theory of Dimensional Earths

Retro Future Earth is an alternate Earth that seems to have the exact same history as Prime Earth up until the later 1960s.

During this time, the major event that happened in the histories of both Earths is the first attempts at space exploration, the creation of NASA and the lunar landings. On Prime Earth, the history is as expected. The space race between the United States and the Soviet Union continued, eventually including China and India. However, on Retro Future Earth there was no space race, as the Soviet Union actually extended a hand of friendship and co-operation to ensure that the early space launches and eventual lunar landings went ahead without any difficulties. This one change in a decision would affect Retro Future Earth greatly, as it would not only change the dimensions technological advancement, but also completely change the political landscape.

The need for co-operation and a united front outweighed any old combative rivalries. The need for conquest and even capitalism changed almost overnight. The acceptance and tolerance of different people, cultures, religions and even those with different sexual orientations was upheld as a human right. Healthcare and education soon became a major focus of every nation on the planet. Ensuring the populace was taken care of was seen as the most important thing among every human culture and society.

This shift in thinking aided nations to not only explore space faster, but also set up colonies on the Moon and scientific stations on Mars by the mid 2000s. Efficient, renewable energy soon overtook mineral resources and non-renewable energy. Old, abandoned mines were soon converted into underground greenhouses. Reforestation efforts went ahead. Conservation efforts and the cleaning of the environment became just a thing governments would do.

For Nikki, once she found the portal that lead to Prime Earth, and she studied the history of Prime Earth and compared it to her own, she began crafting a theory with the help of her Prime Earth counterpart.

Theory of Dimensional Earths

The Theory of Dimensional Earths is simple at its core. Any major decision in the world that is made by a group of people can create a new and different timeline that still runs parallel to Prime Earth in some way. Comparing Retro Future Earth to Prime Earth, the major decision was the choice to assist the newly formed NASA by the Soviet Union's space program to assist in the early days of space exploration. This one choice would go onto the change a great number of things, not just in technological advancement but also in social and political thinking. Even theological belief was changed overnight.

Nikki Hargrove (who worked with her Prime Earth counterpart to draft the thesis) postulated that every major decision throughout the history of the world would go onto create new parallel Earth. But this only included choices made by mankind. Cosmic and natural events were not choices in the same manner as those made by man, but some events may have changed slightly based on other factors that may have taken place to affect many of those cosmic and natural events.

While the paper has been published with both Prime Earth and Retro Future Earth Nikki Hargrove attaching their names to the thesis, it is not widely distributed. Only debated and discussed among those who focus on the science of dimensional and interstellar travel, exploration and study.

Sort of a nemesis, more a good friend

While Grey Hornet does not necessarily have a rogues gallery as other costumed vigilantes might have, she does have one particular nemesis. Actually, antagonist might be a better way to describe it. And even then, not really, as Nikki and Rebecca McGillvary are quite good friends.

Rebecca McGillvary is an arsonist. Becca, as she is known, created a complete persona along with equipment. Going by the monicker of Flame Beetle, Becca would take on secretive jobs to burn down buildings. But this merely feed into her own impulse control disorder often known as pyromania. As Nikki was tracking down Flame Beetle, she began to discover first clues to her identity and later recognizing that Becca had this disorder. Nikki's father, after all, was a detective, and Nikki learned a great deal from her father about recognizing and following clues.

Having determined that Becca had this condition changed how she went about apprehending Becca. Nikki even went to bat for Becca when she was brought to trial, arguing that she required therapy and assistance to overcome her impulse control disorder. Once Becca was sent to prison to serve her time, Nikki made sure to keep in touch with her. This action, as well as the concern Nikki showed to Becca, set the two on a path of friendship.

In that regard, Grey Hornet's worst enemy also happens to be one of her best friends.

Nicolas Hargrove

While Nikki Hargrove from Prime Earth and Retro Future Earth are aware of each other and have met, neither one has met their Praetorian counterpart. They are aware of this Praetorian counterpart, but have made no attempts to meet. As Nicolas Hargrove is very different from Nikki Hargrove.

While Nikki Hargrove began transitioning early in life, Nicolas also mentioned his own wish to be a girl, but was immediately placed into conversion therapy. This involved a great deal of time under the education and watchful eye of Mother Mayhem. Thanks to this, Nicolas began developing highly attuned mental abilities, and eventually joined the Seers.

At present, Nicolas has no idea of his Prime Earth or Retro Future Earth counterparts, but he is aware of both alternate Earths. Nicolas' alias is Psi Hornet, as he has grasped how to use psychic manipulation and can manipulate time.
