Robert Longboat was born in Six Nations, Ontario, next to Lake Erie, but grew up in Bella Coola, British Columbia on Canada’s western coast. It was there that his mutant abilities manifested, triggered by an encounter with a Kermode bear, also known as a Spirit Bear.
Spirit bears are white-furred varieties of black bears. Taking his encounter with the bear as a sign, Robert adopted the name Spirit Bear and moved to Paragon City to continue his training as his powers evolve.
