Annette Felderson was the odd one out in her family. Her father was a skilled inventor and master craftsman. Her mother was highly knowledgeable in the arcane arts. Her sister developed demonic powers when she was in her teens. Annette? She was just a normal girl. She grew up, went to college, got a degree in computer science, and took up a small-time IT job, all the while dreaming of what it would be like for her to join the ranks of the superheroes of Paragon.

Then, one dreary March morning, Annette inexplicably woke up with a catlike appearance and a painful awareness of just how many wireless signals were present in her apartment.

Too excited at the chance to become a hero to be distressed for long, Annette almost immediately signed up with Hero Corps, training her body and honing her newfound data-manipulation powers to become Petabyte, hero of justice and savior of Paragon City.

Powers and Abilities

Energy-Encoding Gene

Annette's primary powers come from a latent mutation that was triggered by her exposure to extraterrestrial chemicals. This genetic alteration allows her to emit a form of low-frequency quantum wave that allows her to manipulate electromagnetic impulses. She uses these powers in a variety of ways, primarily to electrocute foes or invoke energy surges in allies. Her signature technique, dubbed "Force Crash", allows her to absorb large amounts of electromagnetic energy in the air and condense it into a single blast like a large capacitor; in one incident, the entire Skyway City zone reported a loss of power and wireless communications for roughly five minutes after the attack was fired.

"The Color Out of Space"

An extraterrestrial phenomenon first recorded by researchers in 1927, the Color out of Space is a single-celled organism occasionally found at the site of meteor impacts. Colonies can be easily recognized by a bioluminescent glow that observers have difficulty describing; while this is believed to be a hypnotic effect resulting from specificpatterns of flashing the bacteria exhibit, little evidence has been found to corroborate any theory. In most humans, infections inflict mania, widespread tissue damage, and death; sometimes, however, it grants the infected some measure of power.

In Annette's case, the Color has given her far greater control over her Energy-Encoding Gene, allowing her to interact with machines and even the human brain by manipulating subtle electrical signals, a tactic she uses frequently in combat to confuse and disorient foes by broadcasting various media into their minds, and to coordinate with allies to assist them with tactics on the fly. While the full extent of this ability is unknown, it has been observed to extend to the quantum level, allowing Annette to store and summon small objects, phase through walls, and even teleport long distances by entangling matter with electromagnetic waveforms in a process that still isn't fully understood.

Most impressively, Annette is capable of creating a large variety of projections to interact with the physical world. While for most intents and purposes this appears to be a form of hard-light projection, in reality it is a psionic effect, utilizing a combination of mental and matter manipulation to achieve the illusion of hard-light; it is possible for those with high mental resilience to be unable to interact with these objects the same way an average person may, though as Annette is capable of manipulating forces to some extent this may not negate the illusions entirely. Annette has noted that highly-complex forms are far more difficult to maintain, and instead prefers simpler objects in combat such as indistinct balls of light or humanoid figures which she can use as a conduit for her powers.

Other Abilities

In addition to her supernatural abilities, Annette is proficient in street brawling, freerunning, and gymnastics, sporting a very flexible and agile body. She is also an accomplished marksman, able to throw shurikens with deadly accuracy so they ricochet in precise patterns; it is unknown where she learned this ability, and many suspect that she utilizes her powers' affinity for magnetism to manipulate the projectiles' trajectories mid-flight, though this is unconfirmed.

Personality

Petabyte is bold, brash, and excitable, constantly brimming with energy. She's a serial prankster and troublemaker; much of her combat style is centered around being disruptive and getting into her opponents' heads. She can often be seen charging into the fray, typically accompanied by the sound of some forgotten pop single from the early 2000's that achieved viral fame. She's quick to trust and incredibly casual in her demeanor, often dressing haphazardly and blurting out personal information and private matters without a second thought. Despite this, for those who do stick with her, she is incredibly loyal and more than willing to drop everything to help someone in need.

Petabyte enjoys surfing the internet, video games, tabletop RPGs, and anime. She dislikes loneliness and wet fur.
