Backstory
- Luficia wasn't satisfied with immortality.
- Since the end of the Praetorian War, Emily Engel longed for the normalcy that was denied her many years ago. The Steadfast Pact had disbanded and many of her former comrades have gone their separate ways. Emily raised the boy she took under her wing, Jeremiah, and watched him become a hero just like her.
- The thought of watching her son marry, have children and grow old didn't bring her joy but despair. Emily couldn't bare the thought of burying her own son and then her grandchildren, watching whole generations come and go like fine sand. She would face stagnation while life would go on without her.
- If she could not stand being immortal then she would simply undo it through the creation of a homunculus. In order to create a homunculus, one must wield the hands of god to create life through means mankind was not meant to do. Seiken warned her about the death of her body, soul and ego in performing this ritual.
- Emily understood and chose to do it anyway. Jeremiah tried to stop her but he couldn't convince her out of it. All he could do was help her in order to make sure MAGI didn't discover the project or witness it go horribly wrong.
- Then, on June 20th, 2012 at the height of the summer solstice at 7:09 PM, the ritual was performed with the summon with the mix of Greek and Nordic prayer. Seiken and Emily's soul was ripped apart, formed metrically into a new artificial soul and placed into Seiken's former gem. Meanwhile, Emily's body was dissolved into its basic components, reforming into that of a twelve year old little girl.
- The prayers were meant to rip both demonic and incarnate out of the equation. While successfully purging the demonic aspect out of her, the Well of the Furies would not be denied. It sensed something within the new birth and instead blessed the homunculus with a mantle on creation.
- The twelve year old couldn't comprehend such power and became the sun itself, screaming loudly with emotions rushing through her. All it could was a whisper of her own voice in the back of her mind, reassuring her;
- ‘Everything’s going to be okay. You are loved and you are safe.’
- The power fizzled out and Jeremiah scooped the unconscious child into his arms. It was that day that Emily's life came into an end so that a new life, born out of love and wishes from a Praetorian War vet, could rise in her place. There was only one name Emily saw fit to name the child.
- Audel.
After the Ritual...
- As far as Audel knew, she was a twelve year old girl that lived in Paragon City all her life. She lived with her single father, Jeremiah, and they could only afford a cheap apartment in the Kings Row district.
- While her dad did the best he could, he was also a part time hero himself and was gone for long periods of time trying to save the city. It left Audel alone with her books and looking out the window. With her unusual physical prowess, there wasn’t much she could play with; any attempts either broke what she touched or accidentally hurt other kids. The little girl felt like a monster.
- She felt like a lost teenager with nowhere to go in life.. That is, until May Carter and Reed Davis approached her. They sat with her, asked about her interests and showed Audel things she could get into that didn’t involve hurting anyone. It brought so much light into her otherwise lonely mood.
- Everything changed when she noticed the Vahzilok kidnapped May and Reed into the sewers. They were her only friends and she couldn’t let this stand! For once, she decided to not hold back with her power and fight them in the sewer.
- Her friends weren’t the only ones she saved that day; there were other victims waiting to meet under the Vahzilok hacksaw. She burns through the undead, freeing her friends and other civilians in the process. She fought through any other gangs in her way, like the Skulls, and got everyone to safety.
- It was a strange feeling, being thanked instead of scolded for her power.
- It led Audel on a journey of self-discovery, learning her power slowly but surely. She learnt how to control the heat around her and make fire form in her hands, or how to use that raw power to fly through the air. Reed taught her some basics from his kickboxing classes and May snuck in a hand-made costume with stars and stripes.
- The more Audel fought to protect the streets at night, the more she found herself more passionate about protecting the civilians. There was no real explanation how her powers came to be or why but she could do something meaningful about it. Even if her powers felt like the sun itself, she could harness it to protect people.
- Even if some people feared her, there were others who admired her. The more Audel fought gangs and villains, the more she found herself growing attached to the people. Even if she didn’t understand people well or even herself, she had the urge to protect it with all her heart and soul.
- Was this what it meant to be a hero? Is it to guard her friends, family and strangers with her solar might? If the city needed more heroes than she was more than happy to step up.
- After all, that’s who she was now; Solarguard.
Today
- Audel Huxley held the Solarguard moniker, fighting without a hero license up until she was eighteen years old. Her father found out and instead of grounding her, he let her sign up with a license under the condition that she held no secrets from him. He got a big ol’ hug as his answer.
- Since then, she joined the New Defenders in 2022 and became friends with Anomalie, Direct Control, Sun-Gun, Ultrali and many others. Through them did she discover her homunculi heritage and learn to come to terms with it. Eventually, she left the New Defenders to pursue fighting for more than just the city; she wanted to protect the world.
- Unfortunately, Arachnos wouldn’t allow it. They kidnapped her and wanted to study her to try to replicate her grandmother’s homunculi formula for themselves. She broke out and fled for a year until her old friends, now called the Accord, came to her rescue.
- With new and old friends alike, she works with them as if they were her second family the whole time. Together, with the Accord, she works to be the hero she wants to be; protecting a world and all the people she loves so much in it.
- Though the journey of a hero wasn't easy. With the return of Lukas and dealing with Science Lord Rixis, she lost part of her mother within her soul gem. Though thanks to Lukas' indirect hand, her mother's sacrifice and the well's intervention, Audel became something more...
Personality
- Audel didn’t really have a childhood to develop much of a personality; she was very temperamental, struggling to figure out her own emotions when she was younger. It took meeting her friends and being part of the Accord to realize who she is; a kind hearted but excited woman with her playful side held deep within.
- Her loving side is shown to her boyfriend, her friends and even strangers alike. Audel loves to cook and accommodate anyone she meets; she isn’t even above reaching a hand out to a villain in hard times with food.
- Because she lacked a childhood, she doesn’t really have many hobbies except reading or other quiet activities. It wasn’t until her boyfriend did she find herself able to find other hobbies, to play, even.
- Overall, Audel cares and growing older, it’s allowed her to be less temperamental and to open her heart even more to others.
Powers & Abilities
- "Dawn's embrace, bring forth the day, chase the shadows, light my way! With your brilliance, banish the night, grant me strength in morning's light!"
- Hemara Incarnate: Since the incident of her mother's ego death and interference with the Well, Audel lost the incarnate powers of Sol and replaced with Hermana. As such, Solarguard inherited her powers as well as her loving influence.
- Hemara's Philosopher's Stone: The soul gem's shell was created by Direct Control and other influences for Audel's artificial soul. Because of bearing Hermana's mantle, it has empowered and changed the stone in of itself. While originally designed as a Philosopher's Stone, Hermana's mantle has given her soul protection. The stone is capable of bringing a person to life, like any philosopher's stone, but it would not effect the soul. However, this power is only able to be used once a year...
- Love Empowerment: Through Hermana and the remnants of her mother, this allows the Solarguard to channel the profound and transformative power of love to enhance her powers and abilities should Audel ever find herself fighting at night. During the day, this only helps strengthens her instead. The stronger the love she feels to a person she's able to focus on, the stronger and more potent her abilities become.
- Daytime Perception: Audel has heightened senses during daylight hours, enabling her to detect and perceive things more clearly. This includes great distances as well.
- Super Strength: Set apart from her incarnate mantle, her unusual density in her body has gifted her with super strength. Her strength is stronger during the daytime or empowered by her love.
- Invulnerability: Due to being created with unusual density, it's allowed her to become super durable! With Hermana's mantle and her love empowerment, this can increase to being near invulnerable during the daytime. Funny how a miscalculation with numbers led Audel to be this strong.
- Weather Control - Daytime Influence: Audel has limited control over weather phenomena during the day. She's able to clear skies, summon gentle rain or even dispersing powerful storms to protect communities from flooding. Although she's able to attempt this at night, it takes her own solar energy to do it.
- Solar Manipulation & Energy Projection: Absorbing the light from the sun, Audel is able to manipulate aspects from the sun into short or long term blasts. Her signature move is to empower solar energy into her fists for a powerful strike against her opponents!
- Sunlight Healing: Her light has limited ability to heal others with sunlight from herself. She cannot heal herself! While able to tend to minor to moderate injuries, she's only capable of using her sunlight to stability serious to critical injuries until a doctor is able to treat them.
- Daytime Flight: During the day, Solarguard is able to fly at incredible speeds. At night, while able to fly, she's required to use solar energy to allow herself to move at the same speed.
- Animal Communication: Audel can communicate with animals! Being able to understand their needs and feelings, she can also influence their behavior. Her loving warmth can calm aggressive creatures or even rally them to assist her.
Weaknesses
- Acranium: A mystical metal invented by some of the best scholars in Arachnos, it was made specifically to bind or cut through homunculi. Designed to assassinate Solarguard, it has become her personal kryptonite. Even if Acranium is used to forge shackles or metal bars, it is the only thing Audel can't break through brute force. New versions of acranium have shaped it into crystalized shapes that can pulse energy to weaken or even stun the hero.
- Nighttime Limitation: Solarguard's powers are significantly weakened during the night or in the absence of sunlight. She relies on stored solar energy, which can deplete over time. Though love is able to be converted into solar light, if under emotionally durress, this weakness is still at play.
- Eclipse Vulnerability: During solar eclipses or in prolonged darkness, Audel's powers weaken significantly, making her more vulnerable to attacks.
- Hatred: Individuals filled with intense hatred can weaken Solarguard's love empowerment, unless her love is able to overpower hate...
Nemeses
- Arachnos: To them, it was a worst fear come into fruition; one of the biggest heroes that fought against Arachnos had returned. It was enough to give Ghost Widow and even Lord Recluse to pause to that heroic name; Luficia. Many come at Audel in the hope of earning personal favor or under orders to try to destroy her. Originally believing it was Luficia herself, they learnt the truth of her heritage. When they couldn't contain her to have her secrets for themselves, they sought to find ways to destroy her instead.
- Nemesis: This has been recent ever since joining Seismic Impact in saving the city one morning against a Rikti invasion and Nemesis revealed his hand in the plot. It was the first time she's exchanged real blows against Nemesis and his army but it wasn't forgotten.
- The Grun'Tuk Empire: It's DC's fault, really. In his simulated life of a perfect world, he predicted how Audel with six others stopped the invasion of the Grun'Tuk. It was because of this prophecy that it reached the Grun'Tuk... Since then, she's been at war with them since that now has got the Accord involved. They have her marked and she won't stop fighting against the Empire.
- GobbaNak: Even if he serves for the Grun'Tuk, his manipulative nature and magic prowess is not to be underestimated. With his own goals of achieving godhood, he's been set as one of the more deadly enemies to Audel to date.
- NetHack: Kevin and the Passenger; an entity that nearly got Audel killed, she let her light burn against the eldritch monstrosity with Celestial and Dawnkeeper. Now no longer afraid of NetHack, she's prepared to let her light sting should he dare to darken her or her loved one's skies ever again.
- Count Bedlam: It started out nice. The two shared a love of literacy and he seemed interesting. The fear of villainous betrayal was too great and after one incident, the two fell at odds. Bedlam's vengeance will come one day.
