Areunos (Αρέύνός, 𐤀𐤓𐤍𐤔, 𒀀𒈛𒌋𒌋; meaning "one who stirs"), also known as Auripher, is a male hero native to Praetoria. His Primal Earth counterpart is Murkwing.

Lore

In-game biography

"The eldest emanation of a Platonic Ideal, Areunos first manifested in Praetoria during the Bronze Age, though he only began to develop an identity of his own and self-awareness in recent times, adopting the name Auripher. Crossing into Primal Earth out of curiousness, he found it much more palatable than Praetoria and made it his new home. Wanting to interact more directly with mortals, Auripher decided to try his hand at heroism, finding it far more compatible with his nature than the alternatives."

Biography

The eldest emanation of a Platonic Ideal, Areunos first manifested in what is today known as Praetorian Earth during its Bronze Age. For most of his individual existence, he remained an abstract entity, lacking an identity or self - a creature with no goals, ambitions, perceptions, or personality. Only occasionally did he become more concrete, yet only as an involuntary reaction over which he had no control. Afterwards, he would regress back into an abstract state.

This state of affairs, however, changed during the chaos of the Hamidon Wars. Instead of dissipating back into abstraction, Areunos persisted and gradually became more of a concrete entity. Silently observing the rise and consolidation of Praetoria, a rudimentary sense of self began to develop, and soon he was able to differentiate what he was from what he was not.

He looked back on the epithets mortals had given him in ancient times, and picked "Auripher", meaning "the gold-bearer", to serve as his primary name. By the time Primal Earth had been discovered by the Praetorians, Auripher had successfully developed a human-like personality. Of course, with human-like traits came curiosity, which drove him to travel from Praetoria to Primal Earth.

Finding this universe surprisingly far more palatable than his old one, Auripher decided adapt to the current trends and try his hand at heroism, finding it far more compatible with his nature than the alternatives.

Physical appearance

Physically, Auripher resembles a male human on his late teens or early twenties but with various draconic-like characteristics, such as the scales on his body, the wings, the horns on his head, and the tail. Beyond these traits, the most noticeable physical feature of Auripher are his eyes, or lack thereof. Instead of eyes, golden light shines from inside his eye sockets.

Most of the time, Auripher's body is entirely covered by a black armour-like carapace with golden indentations. His mouth and jaw are covered by an outer mandible-like structure which opens at the middle to reveal a human-like mouth. As for casual attire, whenever he is "blending in", Auripher makes use of a sleeveless black coat, blue jeans, and boots for casual situations. Alternatively, he uses a suit.

Names and epithets

The mythological and historical actions of Auripher as well as local conceptions of his figure in ancient times have led to the accumulation of various epithets which would be used to better describe him within various contexts.

Gold-Bearer

The following epithets all share the same meaning, that being "gold-bearer" or "bringer of gold". These were given in reference to the physical traits of Areunos.

  • Auripher: used by a pre-Roman Italic tribe. Later adopted by Areunos as his primary name.
  • Eusopher: the oldest known of his epithets.
  • Khrusophoros: attested in at least one Anatolian Greek city-state.

Other

  • Adarktis: compound meaning either "winged serpent" or "dragon", earned by both Areunos's fondness for dragons, and his subsequent adoption of draconic elements for his physical form. Shared with his Primal Earth counterpart.
  • Adartemos ("Black-Winged" or "Murk-Winged"): epithet earned due to the colour of his wings. Shared with his Primal Earth counterpart.
  • Lukanakis ("of the bright eyes"): a descriptive epithet earned due to Areunos's characteristic shining eyes.

Hooks

General

  • Body is often covered in some sort of black chitin-like armor.
  • Can be sensed as a divine presence
  • Mind can be read, but thought patterns are very abstract
  • Looking into his eyes can cause a temporary tinitus-like sound

Fragment of "Lukanakis and the Dragon"
