Background
The Origin
The amphibious creature, known only as Payara the Taker, was one of four asexually spawned beings from Merulina simply referred to as the Merulines (also including Narwhal the Giver, Luth the Keeper and Dardanus the Replacer), the god and creator of the Coralax. Their creation predated the first Shapers and followed shortly after Merulina settled her body into the ocean depths, upon which the Coralax' wonderful and gorgeous city was built. Psionically connected to Merulina, they searched the far corners of every pond, river, sea and ocean; tasked as advisors who identified all forms of developing aquatic life. They used their psychic (tele-empathic) link to their mother to relay such information, and this information was later utilized by the Coralax Empire as they constructed their beautiful, luminous city, soon dominating the Earth's oceans and subjugating the Virtea.
Though a select few Shapers were made aware of the Merulines, they were sworn to keep their existence a secret from general Coralax society as they did not wish to redirect praise and worship from their mother. Despite this, the Merulines protected the Coralax as they embarked throughout the waters of the entire planet, much to their ignorance. Unfortunately, the sudden silence of Merulina and the reason thereof revealed a weakness to the Merulines relating to their connection, and the process of their mother's immense power eventually transferring into the creation of the Leviathan caused them to be transferred along with her. During the great war between the Mu and Coralax, offset when the former's goddess Hequat raised a Coralax city from the sea and claim it to be Mu Island, Calystix the Shaper called forth the Leviathan. The immense power the beast contained included the essences of the Merulines as well, and once it was transmogrified into coral by Hequat and trapped under modern day Sharkhead Isle, such essences separated from the beast as four coral prisons holding the current humanoid manifestations of Narwhal, Payara, Luth and Dardanus.
The Mu and their goddess managed to destroy three of them before they had the chance to follow Calystix as he escaped into the sea, though ignorant of what they truly were other than pieces of the Leviathan that needed to be disposed of. Payara was the only one who managed to escape. Across thousands of years drifting in the darkest depths, the entombed Meruline experienced many cycles of hibernation and consciousness. During this time, he sliced off extremely fine sheets of coral from the interior of his prison, etching text of an ancient language, symbols and illustrations to compose a tome that told his story, and that of his siblings. Perhaps it was fate that drove his coral prison back from where it originally came from, and upon being discovered by the modern hybrid Coralax, the coral from which the prison was created from was identified as the same composition of the beast. Payara was freed from his entombment at last; spending the next several days recuperating, leaving and returning to the Coralax themselves.
He eventually enlightened the Coralax hybrids of being one of the spawns of Merulina directly, and was the only survivor among the Merulines. To prove his truth, Payara gave them full access to his then-damaged and worn tome, where at least the various illustrations could paint them a picture despite not understanding whatever text was still legible. In return, they enlightened him about the current state of the world they knew. Though he sympathized with their goals, the Meruline warned them about the potential dangers of being seen directly assisting them - drawing unwanted attention to himself and threatening any future prospects he could bring to the Coralax hybrids. Time spent mingling with those of the land, rediscovering his vast array of powers and talents, convinced him that the hostile approach was futile. Payara made the decision to venture to Paragon City, where he openly identified himself and agreed to an investigation conducted by MAGI. The authenticity of the dubbed Tome of the Merulines cleared Payara, and he took full advantage of an opportunity to put his powerful skills to good use...

The True Origin
Every part of the legend of the Merulines is a complete, and utter fabrication - conjured up by Payara utilizing the gullibility and foolishness of many. Payara's true tale begins during the height of the Incan Empire, where he was brought into the world the spawn of an archdemon, and merfolk demigod indigenous to the waters of Central and South America. Payara's ill qualities developed just as rapidly as his powerful form, and he soon grew a cult following. Commanding the worship of mortals through both fear and boon, he was responsible for the destruction of his own mother upon her attempt to stop his power hungry ways. Such an act was public to those who worshipped both his mother and himself, and he soon became labelled as a "Forbidden God". Payara rained terror and lead his twisted followers up to the end Spanish Conquest, where poetically and coincidentally, his own reign ended around the fall of the last Incan resistance.
A growing opposition band of the most powerful sorcerers, priests and druids were eventually able to best the Forbidden God and his loyal followers following a nearly year-long struggle, after many casualties on both sides. Though unable to destroy him, Payara was instead sealed in a coral prison that was sent out into the ocean, destined Northbound while it sank deeper and deeper into the dark, cold, ocean depths that twisted the very natures of beings. When he was eventually recovered in the Rogue Isles by the modem Coralax, the several days Payara spent recuperating were also spent researching, and invading and reading the minds anyone he so chose in order to gain the knowledge he required for manipulation. As he learned more, he fashioned more and more of his false tome under the protection of his psychic illusions and aura masking/fudging until it was ready to be revealed to the Coralax hybrids, and soon to the fools of MAGI.
