Originating as a superhero genre in Japan, "Tokusatsu" literally means "live special effects," referring to such shows' use of live actors and pyrotechnics rather than animated cartoons or comics.
Most Tokusatsu characters "transform" or "henshin" to use their powers, becoming instantly clad in their superhero costume (often consisting of brightly-colored spandex, a face-concealing helmet, and sometimes additional armor).
The Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Metal Hero, and Power Rangers franchises all fit squarely in this category.
