Leaving Home

Charlotte Marceau might not initially seem like the type to want excitement. Largely stoic, her expressions largely manifested in times of extreme emotional output. Arguments, passion, extreme joy. She had emotions, sure. But her hometown was not one she felt comfortable in.

Scottsbluff has a lot going for it. A zoo, lots of parks, Chimney Rock. It's just... You know, if you want excitement in your life, that's not the place to be.

As soon as she was ready for college, Charlotte Marceau ran away.

She packed up her second hand car with all of her possessions, stole her mom's record player and drove across the country to Chicago. Thanks to stellar grades, she had been accepted to Northwestern University's Feinberg medical program. There, she flourished, combining her desire to help people with weekends taking the El to the main city for as much fun as she and her friends could fit in.

She doubled up on her learning, focusing primarily on her medical degree, but adding in excess courses in genetic biodiversity. She understood that the growing meta population couldn't get their needs met with simple medical knowledge, and was determined to find a way to meet their needs. It took extra time accumulating debt before she had all of the classes she decided she wanted. Her time outside of class shifted away from partying with friends to clinicals and internships. She graduated, finally, with honors and was immediately brought into the fold at Northwestern Medical.

Pushing for a broader acceptance of a growing diverse population and the medical applications necessary for treating them, Charlotte was at the forefront of NMH's push to build a wing dedicated to meta care. At the age of thirty-four, she was promoted to its head doctor, having proven her knowledge and ability to apply it to more than a few clients who had initially proven to be otherwise difficult to treat.

The Terrible PR Opportunity

During her push for all of this, and the rise to becoming one of the premier doctors, Charlotte had opted to run a barrage of bloodwork to plot out various points of genetic demarcation in mutants. She had added her blood to the list, initially believing hers to be baseline human. The mapping of her DNA showed a potential mutation, but at her age, it was assumed to be inert. They found several others like hers, and added it to the study. She thought nothing else of it.

Until things at the hospital blew up. A malpractice suit was filed against NMU and several of its doctors for failing to accept a patient into the Meta Care wing. The child had died when their body converted excess carbon dioxide in their private room to Sulphur dioxide. Their parents argued that, had the hospital run necessary bloodwork and properly monitored their child, they would not be dead. They also argued that, as the premiere meta care hospital in northern America, they should have been more alert and better equipped to help their child learn to function with this mutation.

When the news broke, Charlotte was livid. They were supposed to screen all patients. To let her staff in on cases they might be able to help. She was tense for a week, waiting for the case to continue through the courts. She got into an argument with the hospital's administration, and when they told her to go cool off and take a break, she became incensed. On her way to her office, the anger only boiled up... and when one of the staff asked how it went, she exploded. Verbally... but slowly it turned literal.

A section of the wing went up in flames, Charlotte in the center of it. While the evacuation was quick and effective, several staff and three patients suffered fatal injuries. More than a few others were seriously hurt. The families of the survivors and those that were lost were quick to form another law suit.

Charlotte spent the next month grappling between learning to control her own newly awoken mutation and handling the fallout from the accident. Eventually it went to trial, with Charlotte being brought to the stand. While she was upset that there had been such a loss of life, she testified that it wasn't her fault. Yes, it was the result of her mutation. A mutation she had previously thought inert. The large majority of mutations triggered during the flux of adolescence, but hers had come under extreme duress.

She further added that while it was the result of her own body, she should not be held responsible, because she had previously had no experience controlling anything such as that. Would you blame a seven year old for catastrophic damages in the wake of their mutation burgeoning? Why should she be any different.

It... didn't go over very well. The jury was split. Facing the loss of her job at minimum... and prison for the rest of her life if they went all in, Charlotte did the only thing she could in the face of idiots. Having not been under anything larger than house arrest, she packed her things up again.. and left.

This time for the Etoile Islands.

WIP, my dudes.
