Biography

If you ask her about it, Glitter-Girl's existence begins sometime in early 2024 when she "exploded onto the scene" intercepting purse snatchings on the streets of Steel Canyon and "investigating the clockwork," all while posting about her exploits to a largely uninterested internet. If asked about anything other than her Tweetster page or her snazzy gear, or about any time further in the past, she responds with only a flippant laugh and a cryptic remark about "always being special."

In reality Janet Lee didn't grow up feeling particularly special. Her mutation meant that from childhood she was tiny and feeble, with long pointy ears that made her look like an elf or goblin. Her parents were compassionate to her situation, and as small businesses owners in Toronto they were able to provide her with a comfortably sheltered middle-class existence, but Janet generally felt very small and unimportant as the shut-in mutant daughter of an immigrant couple living in the suburbs of Canada.

When Janet reached her teens and her powers started awakening it felt like the answer to a prayer, a justification for all the times she felt like she didn't belong: she wasn't just different, she was special! Sure, her mutation maturing meant that her appearance got even more abnormal, with her hair turning an inhuman magenta, but she didn't care. She was done blending in and feeling small, she had a way of standing out and she was going to grab it with both hands.

Janet began practising her abilities religiously and researching ways to make them effective as a crime-fighting tool, dreaming of the fame and glory that come with being a costumed hero. She was able to convince her parents to send her to university in Paragon City, touting their strong science credentials, and once she was living on her own her work into building her new persona really hit the ground. Before she finished her first year of her BSC she had assembled the first prototype of her patrol gear and began taking it out into the streets.

Janet's motivation for putting on the cape may have been a bit vain and shortsighted, and she's frequently disappointed by how much more difficult and dangerous the hero life is than she had dreamed, but her compassion for victims of crime and her genuine desire to make a difference keep her from giving up. She's passionately committed to minimizing violence and to reconstructive justice, and believes her powers make her well suited to setting an example as a non-lethal combatant.

Janet is constantly burning the candle at both ends, juggling her classes, her online life and her superheroing, all while trying to keep up with the college party scene. She's perpetually under-slept and functions by being almost constantly wired on a noxious cocktail of caffeine, sugar and study drugs which can make her seem a bit spastic. After just a few months of this lifestyle Janet was already beginning to see that it wasn't sustainable, and she joined up with The Sentry, an up and coming super-group of street-level heroes in the hopes of finding support and a better balance in her life. The band of do-gooders seems to be rubbing off on her, and most recently she's been starting to consider her social impact outside of just knocking out bad-guys, using her online profile to highlight good causes instead of just shameless self-promotion.

Powers and Abilities

Light Projection/Manipulation

Janet's only natural power is to create and control visible light. Most simply, this takes the form of creating twinkling fairy lights that she can vary in intensity from barely visible to blindingly bright; but she can also control light in her vicinity, bending and redirecting it, or changing its wavelength. She's still honing her skills but so far she's learned to render herself functionality invisible and create confusing and disorienting illusions to misdirect her enemies; she lacks finesse though, and her illusions are rarely convincing for very long. It may be possible for her to affect electromagnetic energy outside of the visible band, but so far she's limited to what she can see.

Technical Aptitude

Janet has a voracious mind and is self-taught in a variety of mechanical and digital technologies. Her skills are decidedly amateur level, but she's exceptionally resourceful at acquiring tech, both civilian and otherwise, and adapting it to compensate for her limited powers and small physical stature.

Equipment

  • Wingsuit/Cryo-Rockets: Made with Sky-Raider technology she was able to "source" Glitter-Girl's flight suit is carefully tailored to her dimensions, and she's endlessly tinkering with it to get the balance right, but it provides her superior mobility both in and out of combat. She's particularly proud of her custom endothermic fuel mixture which ensures that her afterburn doesn't scorch surfaces she touches, instead leaving a thin layer of hoarfrost that usually melts within seconds. She's not a true flyer, her wings don't provide lift but instead guide her descent and landing, but her rockets can allow her short periods of sustained flight before the cold from the fuel reaction causes them to freeze up.
  • Energy Gauntlets: A pair of mechanical gloves that Janet lovingly calls her "Glitter Guns," these gloves are essentially a pair of UV emitters with an oversized power source. The photons they emit are just at the edge of the visible band, but specially energized, slowing them and imparting them with infinitesimal mass. Without her they're just a couple of insanely overbuilt black-lights but she can use her powers to impart even greater energy to their beam, enough to knock a man flat on his back. Glitter-Girl is completely dependent on this weapon against any enemy that she can't confuse or blind with her illusions, but even she doesn't understand the technology behind them very well, and she's terrified of over-tuning them and creating radiation in a band that she couldn't control or contain; so their output is capped at a low energy level.
  • AR Goggles: Keeps her up to date on her socials while on patrol, and provides feedback from her various equipment. Importantly, they also have flash suppression features and an infrared camera, which Janet needs to avoid blinding herself with her flashes or when turning invisible.
  • Teleporter: Quickly after registering with the FBSA Glitter-Girl set to work jail-breaking her standard issue emergency medical transporter and she's now managed to hack it to redirect to any of the major teleport hubs around the city and serve as a personal transportation device.
  • Voice Amplifier/Sound System: Originally added to her setup so that she could alert civilians to danger in emergency situations, Glitter-Girl has a speaker setup in her backpack that she can use to amplify or modulate her voice. She sometimes uses it in concert with her illusions to disguise herself, more often however she uses it to pump out pop music during combat, for both her own entertainment and to aggravate her enemies.
  • Crash Panels: After some close calls Glitter-Girl has recently integrated a defibrillator setup into her gauntlets. An AR first-aid protocol in her headset helps her serve as a field-medic despite a lack of formal training.
  • Stun Baton: In order to deal with enemies who aren't affected by her illusions, and for whom her concussive blasts lack the necessary impact for a take-down, Glitter-Girl has a telescoping electric prod with a variable amperage for subduing human and non-human opponents.
  • Gas Grenades: In order to get her to stop loitering around PPD precincts, harassing officers, racing squad cars to emergency calls and generally making a nuisance of herself, her contacts in the police force bribe Glitter-Girl off with surplus teargas grenades which she keeps on her utility belt for clutch situations and bragging rights.

Weaknesses

  • Weakness: Physically speaking, Glitter-Girl is very small of stature and possesses significantly less raw physical strength than the average adult human.
  • Power Limitations: Glitter-Girl's illusions and light displays work only on visible light. She can't conceal herself from other forms of detection, and she can do very little to affect an enemy who isn't reliant on sight as their primary sense.
